Mike
I thought you were fantastic tonight on the ben cousins story. I have never emialed you before with my thoughts , but i thought you do deserve a big pat on the shoulder for you involvement on the show. A lot of people could take stock of the way you impressed. And i hope they do. I am a former addict, and I say former unlike Ben who should be saying to himself that he is a former addict. Once an addict always an addict i think is too negative. We should never focus on the negative of ourselves, nor should we shy away from it.
I want to give you my views as a former addict. And Let me say i write this to you, because of the way you were on the show tonight. Sometimes in my former life as an addict i wanted to take myself into the backyard and give myself one hell of an uppercut , so on that way of thinking give yourself a pat on the back. I met you briefly in Richmond supermarket and you took the time to talk football with me, Things like that can stay with a person so i thankyou for that. But I am writing because i think the show missed the real reasons why addiction affects many people. So if i may take the time , these are my thoughts.
I think the real reason why addictions happen to a person is because of a LACK OF ENJOYMENT OF ALL THINGS NORMAL.
I know that can be seen and read many ways. But when a person stops enjoying the normal enjoyable things , they will search outside those broundries. As we saw with Ben tonight. He life was anything but normal. Should we be surprised the whilst football has ventured into the professional ranks and money and fame are of those of which rocks stars had, that we see the same problems rock stars faced. Brian wilson who survived addictions once said. (i dont want to do an elvis)
I as a former addict do want to say, when someone starts to bore of the enjoyment of all things normal, then the warning signs should flash. My addiction was a wonderful poem when there was nothing to read, a new toy when all others were broken, a song when i felt deaf and a lover when i was lonely. Untill all peoples understand that, then ignorance and tolerance will be lacking.
you can publish that if you like , they are only my thoughts.
Let me just say this to you Mike. Well done again. I thought you were absolute genuine on that show tonight and I think most former addicts will appreciate, the way in which you handled yourself. Most current addicts wont care. sadly. But to ask a addict to stop is like asking him to give up his girl, or his best friend. Bryan Cousins story of trying to stop Ben leaving the house could have been about a love that ben had or a friend that Ben was off to help. Its that powerful. its a romero and Juliet. And its eqaul in its measure. The drug loves the addict just as much as the addict loves the drug. Wether its alcohol , gambling, eating, smoking, Addiction is the loss of enjoyment of all things normal.
One more thing Bryan cousins should win father of the year. what a true hero.
thanks steve
